Emporia’s Expert Spotlights series shines a light on leaders across industries who bring deep expertise, a spirit of innovation, and practical insights for researchers and decision-makers. For this interview, we spoke with Phil Nadel, Managing Director at Forefront Venture Partners in Boca Raton, Florida, to discuss the experiences that shaped his perspective as both an operator and investor.

About Phil Nadel

Mr. Nadel is a well-respected serial entrepreneur, venture capital investor, mentor, published author and frequent speaker at industry events and leading university business schools. He has started and sold several companies and has invested more than $400M in more than 200 startups including Grove Collaborative, Calm, Boundless, Havenly, and GRIN. Phil was the co-founder and Managing Director of Barbara Corcoran Venture Partners and is the founder and Managing Director of Forefront Venture Partners. For 9 seasons, Phil was one of the investors on Spotify’s highly-acclaimed podcast, The Pitch. He is also a regular instructor at startup incubators and volunteers as a mentor for Techstars, SCORE, and Junior Achievement.

The New Rules of Venture in an AI-Driven Era

Phil Nadel sees venture capital entering a defining moment, shaped largely by the rapid acceleration of AI:

“It’s all about AI disruption and which companies will seize the opportunity and which ones will perish.”

From his position at Forefront Venture Partners, he sees a widening gap forming between companies that are built with AI at their core and those trying to layer it into existing models. This shift is especially visible in SaaS, where traditional models based on incremental efficiency and seat-based pricing are being challenged by AI-native companies delivering faster and more outcome-driven solutions. For investors, this changes how opportunities are evaluated. It is no longer just about market size or growth potential. It is about whether a company is structurally aligned with where technology is heading.

AI as a Daily Operating Layer

While AI is often positioned as a competitive advantage, Phil sees it becoming a baseline expectation.“Critical role. We use AI and other technologies every day.”

Across sourcing, diligence, and portfolio support, AI is already embedded into daily workflows. It helps surface patterns in deal flow, accelerates research, and supports more informed decision-making. As a result, the bar is shifting. Simply using AI is no longer enough to stand out. The real differentiation comes from how deeply it is integrated into operations and how effectively it improves outcomes. For founders, this means building with AI as a core layer rather than treating it as an add-on.

Raising the Bar on Founder-Investor Communication

As expectations rise across the venture ecosystem, Phil points to a consistent gap in how startups communicate with investors.“More consistent reporting from startups.”

In a more disciplined funding environment, clear and regular reporting becomes increasingly important. Strong communication allows investors to stay closely aligned with company performance and step in with support when needed. It also builds credibility over time. Founders who treat reporting as a strategic tool rather than a routine task are better positioned to strengthen relationships with their investors and unlock more value from those partnerships.

The Work Behind the Capital

Phil’s role spans sourcing deals, performing diligence, advising founders, and maintaining relationships with LPs. Across all of this, his focus remains consistent.“Helping founders achieve their goals of building a successful, sustainable company.”

Having invested over $400M across more than 200 startups including Calm and Grove Collaborative, he brings a perspective shaped by a wide range of outcomes. This experience reinforces the importance of fundamentals. Clear positioning, strong execution, and adaptability tend to matter more than short-term momentum.

A Clear-Eyed Optimism About the Future

Phil describes his outlook in simple terms.“Optimistic, always. Technology combined with the entrepreneurial spirit are a powerful force.”

While he expects meaningful changes across sectors like SaaS as a result of AI, he views this period as one of expansion rather than contraction. New categories will emerge, and new leaders will be built. The companies that succeed will be those that can move quickly, integrate new technologies effectively, and stay focused on delivering real value.

Advice for Founders and Operators

Phil’s perspective reflects the moment the industry is in. The pace of change is high, but the fundamentals remain the same.

Founders who stay close to technological shifts, communicate clearly, and execute consistently will be better positioned to navigate uncertainty. As AI continues to reshape competitive dynamics, success will depend on combining strong operational discipline with a willingness to adapt.

Never miss an opportunity.
